For try outs, women should bring a $5 application fee, water and their identification and should wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes. The Arizona Derby Dames will have helmets, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards to borrow. Skate rentals are available from Great Skate for an additional fee. You don’t have to be game-ready to be accepted! The Derby Dames are looking for basic skating ability on a rink and the potential to train and teach you for the banked track. Skills assessed will be whether you can move forward steadily on your skates, if you can slow down or stop using your wheels or toe stops, if you can follow instructions, if you aren't afraid to fall if you are shown how to do it properly. Also, keep in mind that commitment, enthusiasm, a positive attitude and personality are even more important to the Arizona Derby Dames during the try outs than the current level of your skating skills. Try outs are closed so that women don't feel the added pressure of an audience - so no spectators! Friends or family will not be allowed in the venue during try outs. After a very successful 4th season at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in 2009, the Arizona Derby Dames were hard at work in their off season building and training on their very own roller derby banked track (a traditional roller derby type sloped oval track, constructed of wood, steel & masonite). Now with two regulation season double headers on the banked track under their belts so far in 2010, and the first group of recruits for the banked track trained and drafted to teams, the Arizona Derby Dames are looking for women to become the newest Arizona Derby Dames.
Only a handful of modern roller derby leagues in the world own and skate on a banked track. Arizona Derby Dames are proud to be bringing a traditionally inspired brand of roller derby with a new age twist to their hometown. Arizona Derby Dames joins the ranks of the all-women, skater-run roller derby leagues like the Los Angeles Derby Dolls, the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls in Austin, Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls in Oklahoma City and the San Diego Derby Dolls that are the new breed of unscripted, ultra-competitive, 100% real banked track roller derby. Designed by Kitten Traxx Banked Track Design based in Los Angeles, but built by the skaters of the Arizona Derby Dames with the help of a group of extremely dedicated and hard-working engineers, volunteers and Arizona Derby Dames support staff, this banked track and their monumental 5th season is a culmination of four years of dedication and hard work by the women of the Arizona Derby Dames to reach the original goal of the founders of the league of becoming a modern banked track roller derby league.
